RealAudio Encoder 1.0b3
July 3, 1995
The RealAudio Encoder converts 8-bit and 16-bit audio files into RealAudio
format files. The following formats are supported:
8- and 16-bit AIFF
8-bit MuLaw AU files
8- and 16-bit AU files
8- and 16-bit Sound Designer II files
(Use SoundHack or SoundApp 1.5.1 to convert other sound file formats into
one of the supported formats.)
The RealAudio Encoder works only on monophonic sound files recorded at sample
rates of either 8 Kz, 11025 KHz, 22050 KHz or 44100 KHz. If the sound file has
a sample rate close to one of these rates it will also be accepted, but there
may be a slight degradation of the sound due to the sample rate conversion.
The valid sample rate ranges are:
8000 - 8100 Hz
11000 Hz - 11200 Hz
22000 Hz - 22300 Hz
44000 Hz - 44400 Hz
The RealAudio Encoder requires System 7.0 or later. Due to the complexity
of the encoding algorithm, the RealAudio Encoder application will only run
on PowerMac and Macintosh computers with FPUs. A PowerMac is highly
recommended.
Note: In order to audition the encoded files, you will need to install the
RealAudio Player onto your computer. The RealAudio Player is available from
http://www.realaudio.com/
To use the RealAudio Encoder:
1) Run the RealAudio Encoder application. The RealAudio Encoder Beta version
1.0b3 is a"fat" binary that will run on PowerMacs or Macintoshes with a 680x0
CPU and an FPU.
2) Press the Input button in the Encoder window to select an input file.
Only monophonic AU, AIFF and SD2 files are currently supported.
3) Type the name of the clip in the Name field.
4) Type the author of the clip in the Author field.
5) Type the copyright notice into the Copyright field.
6) Press the Process button to begin encoding. You will be prompted to enter
the output file name and its location. The Encoder Status display will indicate
the process of the encoder.
8) Press the Cancel button or type Cmd . (Command key and period key)
to abort the encoding process.
9) To audition the output file, double click on the output file icon in the
directory in which it was saved. The RealAudio Player will be launched and
you will hear the audio of the encoded file.
10) You can set default values for the Title, Author and Copyright fields by
entering the information in the Preferences dialog. Select Preferences from
the File menu. Leave the field blank if you do not want a default name.
11) You can select the amount of processing the Encoder will do in the
background. Select Preferences from the Edit menu and enter a value into the
Background Processing field. Values greater than 0 denote the number of
chunks the encoder will process before giving time to other applications. A
value of 1 will give the most time to other applications, while larger
values will give more processing time to the Encoder. Entering 0 will cause
the Encoder to use ALL of the CPU time and no time will be given to other
applications. Negative values will default to 0. Suggested background values
are 1 for a 680x0 Mac and 10 for a Power Mac. The default value is 10.
12) You can edit the Title, Author and Copyright fields of an existing RA.
Select Change Description from the File menu. Use the Input button to select
a RA file. Make the desired changes to the Title, Author and Copyright
fields and click on the change button. The RA file's description information
will be updated and the audio will remain unchanged.
